New Sun Rising
New Sun Rising
hand sculpted ceramic tiles, mosaic tesserai
225 square feet

Funded by a Fulton County Public Art Commission for the Southwest Arts Center in Atlanta, Ga., I created 200 individually sculpted & glazed ceramic tiles & over 55 panels of mosaic tesserai to highlight the arched canopy of the building. The abstract patterns suggest rhythm, movement, music, drama, and the visual arts, with a large sun rising in the center of the arch. Sitting on top of the sun is the image of a masked African female figure, from which the streams of color and energy emanate. The carved brick columns at the entrance were created by another artist, Marianne Weinberg-Benson.
